It took six weeks but "Black Panther" has finally been unseated as the top film at the box office. The monsters vs. robots science-fiction sequel "Pacific Rim: Uprising" dethroned "Black Panther" with an estimated $28 million.

Pacific Rim Inspired the "Mako Mori Test." Uprising Gives the Character a Far Less Inspiring Arc.

Slate

When Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim debuted in 2013, fans who valued its Kaiju-conquering, Charlie Hunnam-clobbering, and ultimately world-saving Japanese female hero as much as its monster-on-robot action were surprised to discover that it didn't pass that old standby, the Bechdel test. So they proposed an alternate standard: the Mako Mori test, inspired by Rinko Kikuchi's character in the film. Apparently coined by a Tumblr user named Chaila (the post has been since deleted) "to live alongside the Bechdel Test," it uses the following criteria: The Mako Mori test is passed if the movie has: a) at least one female character; b) who gets her own narrative arc; c) that is not about supporting a man's story. While that might seem like a low bar, this was partially by design. It's really easy to throw away a film because of [the Bechdel] test … if you're a white woman and can easily find other films with white women who look like you and represent you … If Pacific Rim does nothing for you, there are plenty of other films that will generally do quite well for white women.

'Pacific Rim: Uprising' Review: A Big, Loud Movie That Needs Guillermo del Toro

WIRED

The same goes for Uprising's talk of the strange scientific properties of kaiju blood and the importance of banding together at the end of the world, which can feel like a strong case for un-canceling the apocalypse. Sequels are never going to be truly original--canonical consistency is the entire point--but any subsequent installments in a franchise should at least try to further the lore, and I'm fairly certain the only new thing I learned in Uprising was that tapping into kaiju brains can get you so high you'll want to marry a kaiju brain.

New 'Pacific Rim: Uprising' Trailer: Can the Sequel Live Up to the Original?

WIRED

It's got those giant robot mechs--aka "jaegers"--and even a few crazy-ass kaiju. Star Wars: The Force Awakens star John Boyega toplines this time around, and Rinko Kikuchi and Charlie Day have returned to reprise their roles. Gone, though, are the original's director Guillermo del Toro (he's listed as a producer and story writer), stars Idris Elba and Charlie Hunnam, and screenwriter Travis Beacham. In Pacific Rim terms: the movie might have a new pilot, but the mech's got the same wiring. However, Uprising, which takes place 10 years after the events of the first Pacific Rim, has a strange legacy to uphold.

'Star Wars' actor John Boyega set to battle giant monsters in & apos;Pacific Rim' sequel - LA Times

Los Angeles Times

The breakout star of "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" will be canceling the apocalypse in the sequel to the 2013 sci-fi action film "Pacific Rim." Boyega will have a lead role in the film playing the son of character Stacker Pentecost, played in the original film by Idris Elba. Directed by Guillermo del Toro, "Pacific Rim" centered on a battle between human-piloted giant robots and Godzilla-style giant monsters known as kaiju. While the film grossed just 102 million domestically, it pulled in a more impressive 411 million worldwide. Steven S. DeKnight, who created the Starz series "Spartacus," is set to make his feature directing debut with the "Pacific Rim," which will begin shooting at the end of this year, after Boyega wraps shooting on "Star Wars: Episode VIII." "I am very proud and happy to welcome John into a fantastic sandbox," Del Toro said in a statement. "The'Pacific Rim' universe will be reinforced with him as a leading man as it continues to be a multicultural, multi-layered world. 'The World saving the world' was our goal and I couldn't think of a better man for the job."
